Somewhere in the 3312 BB posts I have read in the past few days I came across a reference to 1970s attempts to position methanol to where ethanol is now -- an extremely foolish approach by the United Statians to ending hydrocarbon dependency which ends up consuming more hydrocarbons as input than it is supposedly displacing. Of course, that's not how it was described...

If I can recapture where the post was, I'll link it, but don't hold your breath.
