The problem with the United States approach to ethanol is that they are using corn, and not even the stalks, just the ears of corn. This puts them at an immediate disadvantage, as sugar cane-based ethanol production is much more efficient as it uses the entire plant.

Add in that American corn production is in the hands of agribusiness, whose approach requires massive inputs of hydrocarbon-derived energy in the form of fertilizer and such.

Then add in that this particular type of corn farming is extremely destructive to the soil, and that it is driving up corn prices and hence dead animal carcass (meat) and tortilla prices, and you can see why the only reason the US has adopted this approach is due to powerful politicians from the Corn Belt states.

What a boondoggle!
