Thanks, Rob S.

My motivation behind asking about WiFi as a vehicle for backhaul stemmed from a situation that requires a temporary bridge for marinas and vacationers across a body of water and onto an island until a scheduled underwater cable is installed, maybe two or three years out. End users would be fed from APs on shore. Other alternatives are few to none, unless someone were to get serious enough at the island's town haul and consider a LOS microwave link. I understand the downsides related to precipitation and fog over water, but the provisions on the island today consist of little to nothing at all for some of its sections.

The distinction you made between WiFi's nature, being without order or plan, and that of WiMAX as a "managed service", resounds. That the ability of WiMAX to support WiFi-like capabilities has been placed on the back burner, however, is news to me, if I read you correctly. Although, I didn't read in your statement that it was a definitive one. I wonder if you, and perhaps Petere, BenWobbles and others who also happen to be well versed on this topic, might provide some additional insights here.

How would you rank the likelihood on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 representing full WiFi support over WiMAX by 2008? 2010? Curious ...
