Peter, thanks for weighing in.

Concerning my Gilligan's Island odyssey, as you suggested it might be, the shot over the body of water that I was referring to is a long distance one, and I'm probably stretching expectations, since it could be as far away as fifteen to seventeen miles, depending on where a tower can be erected on the mainland. Fog, rain and winter forms of precipitation certainly do come into play in this case.

On the matter of comparing the manageability of WiFi and WiMAX, it was my impression from what Bob was stating (Bob, please clarify this point), that the OAM&P specifications (for lurkers: operations, admin, maintenance and provisioning) that are written into WiMAX are more extensive than those for WiFi. And to the extent that WiMAX is slated to support back office accounting and other OSS systems, it would appear that this makes some sense.. at least more so than one would expect WiFi to satisfy similar ends in the traditional SP space. Not having trekked through the specs, however, I'm at a loss. Even if I were to peruse those specifications I'd still be clueless with respect to how service providers and vendors intend to implement and provision these systems, except to note that there would be wide variances across the board.

ps - I'm not sure how I wound up responding to myself here, but this message was intended for Peter E.
