Update of my PCI hdtv tuner card...

Subtitled

The lie of digital convergence

One of the benefits of putting this tv/hdtv
tuner card in my personal computer, was the
promise that I'd be able to capture video.
And capture video not only from tv, but
also record hdtv, and import my camcorder
video, digitize it, and put the home movies
on DVD.

For the second time in past five years I've
bought a PCI card, installed it, and had only
very limited success using it to capture home
movies. The experiment has been a miserable failure.
And the worst part about it, is the video cards
have worked up to a point, but then something
else fails.

I could go on and on, but for somebody who
is only moderately technically savvy these devices
generally over promise and under deliver. I suspect
a hobbiest could get the card to work (it does
capture video--for about two minutes, and then
things go bad...)

anyway, end rant.

I cannot recommend a PC tv tuner as a replacement to
a normal hardware solution. You can buy stand alone
tv tuners that do HDTV, and you can get cable provider
set top boxes, and those are clearly the way to go for now
in my mind if you gotta have hdtv.
