The Lowly Motofone ...

I never thought this one would live up to expectations ...

With sales of Motorola’s self-developed ultra-low-cost handset (Motofone) failing to meet expectations, the handset vendor is resuming its partnership with Compal Communications on the production of a new handset, dubbed Long Beach Island (LBI), and fellow Taiwan handset ODMs may see chances to regain ultra-low-cost handset orders from Motorola.

Built on the company's SCPL-platform, which highlights a thin and sleek design, Motofone is priced under US$50 and was once regarded as the flagship ultra-low-cost handset that would help the company gain market share in emerging markets. Motorola launched Motofone in the fourth quarter of 2006 and at one time aimed to ship 5-10 million units per quarter. ###

Also this from the NY Times ...

The "Motofone", a low-cost handset the company had high hopes for is not hitting the numbers it was looking for. Flextronics and Foxconn, Taiwan companies, put these babies together for Moto. They said they are impacted by any strategy adjustment and are holding off on expansion plans related to the business. A new initiative "Long Beach Island" (NJ shore?), is expected to mark a shift to a new low-cost line. It is aiming high, once again, for sales of the low-reaching handsets. But this time, production will go to Taiwan's Compal.
