Having been superseded by the new WiMax, Local Multipoint Distribution Service (LMDS) - a broadband wireless access technology specified in IEEE 802.16.1 and commonly operating on frequencies range 25-32 GHz can provide higher bandwidth (OC3+) with shorter distance (up to 12 miles?) than WiMax.

With XO/Nextlink’s (the largest holder of LMDS spectrum in the US) revitalized effort and business plan, is LMDS morphing into a viable wireless alternative for enterprise access and wireless backhaul?
