i doubt it is backbone. i assume the family and doctor discussed the situation. i know of few cancer patients that are living and in much more serious situations for a last several years. sometimes folks go for a few years without any out break of new tumors. often they can be brought back under control again with a new drug. Edwards did the right thing imo. announced his wife's cancer has returned. now the public is aware of the situation and can vote for or against edwards if he was on their list of potential presidents. It shouldn't matter to us folks who do not think he would last in the race anyway.
