Yes but now it looks like we (I use the term loosely here) have enough troops, equipment, etc. to do the surge until August. After that we're done except for leaving.

That's apparently what Petreus understands. There's also a growing idea that there is no political solution anyway because the Maliki government is not trusted by Sunnis. Even if violence is squashed down with the surge, the 'government' cannot take root.

Then what happens? Do we (again loosely) leave it up to a Shiite strongman to emerge and squash the Sunnis? Do we leave it up to Iran and Syria and Jordon to take care of the failed state on their borders? Do we hope Saddam II arises from the ashes of the civil war? What happens next?

This is still on Dubya's watch and, even with their huge profits on oil and noncompete contracts, it's a huge loss. Maybe that's why HAL's taking off for Dubai.

Maybe their execs do not want to be in the US when it all comes to a head this summer.

Just speculating but, you know, everyone else appears to be doing nothing but speculating as well.
