I think Intel would be real careful about cutting the MMX prices below fully burdened cost of production until the FTC thing is over.

AMD's best defense against that is to have a chip as fast as or faster than Intel's second fastest chip. IMO, Intel will never lower the price of their top two chips (right now, the 266 and 300 MHz Pentium II's) to less than $600. (The reason I say, "second fastest" is that they sell so few of their fastest chip that they don't make enough money on it to finance a price war at the lower speeds.)

In the near term, release of the 200 MHz notebook chip or the 266 MHz K6 would meet these criteria. In 1998, AMD needs to release the 300 MHz K6+ before Intel comes out with the 400 MHz Deschutes.
