Dow Jones take on the ruling UPDATE: Split Decision In Broadcom/Qualcomm Video Patent Battle March 22, 2007: 08:16 PM EST SAN FRANCISCO (Dow Jones)- A federal judge issued a mixed decision Wednesday about how Qualcomm Inc. obtained patents central to a 2005 legal fight with rival chipmaker Broadcom Corporation. Senior U.S. District Judge Rudi Brewster set aside allegations Broadcom raised that Qualcomm (QCOM) didn't appropriately disclose certain details while obtaining the two video compression technology patents. Brewster adopted a jury's finding that while seeking the patents' approval, Qualcomm violated its duty to disclose certain things to an industry body, thus ruling in favor of Broadcom (BRCM) . Brewster set a May 2 hearing to decide the appropriate next steps in the case. Qualcomm sued Broadcom in a San Diego federal court in October 2005, alleging some Broadcom products violated two of its patents. On Jan. 26, 2007, a jury found Broadcom did not infringe on the patents. The jury also issued "advisory verdicts" that Qualcomm committed "inequitable conduct" when it went before the U.S. Patent and Trade Office.
