It's the back muscles. Push with the bow hand and pull with the string hand. Used to be a guy 35 miles from here who made longbows out of Osage Orange. Great shot and used a bow with an 85 pound pull.

New bows are mostly compound, using pulleys. A 60 pound pull will drop off to about 30 pounds of pull half way back meaning a person can hold it at full draw with half the effort. The big plus is the arrow is already moving when the most power is applied. Really puts some speed to the arrow.

I had a target that a cedar arrow out of my recurve would penetrate about 6". Tried it a few years ago with a compound bow and a carbon/graphite arrow, arrow went through it and hardly slowed.
