Glenn, the Nortel release you posted seems contradictory to this one:

Centertel Selects Nokia For The GSM 1800 Network In Poland

biz.yahoo.com

HELSINKI, Finland--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 1, 1997--Centertel and Nokia have signed an agreement for the supply of the first GSM 1800 network in Poland. Deliveries will start immediately.

Nokia will deliver a network switching system (NSS), which includes high capacity Nokia mobile switching centres and base station systems to Centertel. The base station systems include base station controllers (BSC) and base transceiver stations (BTS). Nokia will also provide the Nokia Network Management System NMS/5000 for overall GSM network management, as well as the Nokia NMS/2000 and NMS/250. In addition, Nokia will deliver a full IN solution platform to Centertel. Customer services including training, installation and commissioning are also covered by the contract. Operational and maintenance assistance, software support, emergency support and hardware repair are included in the Technical Support Agreement.

As Mr Mikko Heikkonen, President Network Systems, Nokia Telecommunications explains, ``Centertel's success in Poland is an excellent example of an operator moving from analogue network services to a digital network. We are very happy that we have been with Centertel in their NMT network and can continue this successful partnership with their GSM 1800 network.''

Centertel, the nationwide NMT 450 network operator with over 200,000 subscribers, is a joint venture of Telekomunikacja Polska SA and France Telecom. Centertel's analogue network opened for commercial use in 1992 and was the first mobile telephony network in Poland. Nokia has also supplied Centertel's NMT 450 analogue network. Having won the GSM/DCS 1800 licence earlier this year, Centertel will launch its network in 1998.

Nokia offers total GSM systems, with everything from digital mobile phones to transmission and switching. Having supplied GSM technology to 65 operators in 34 countries, Nokia ranks as the world's number one supplier of GSM 1800 networks.

Me: Both Nokia and Nortel seem to have got a piece of the new GSM 1800 system. I'm going to guess that Nokia got the lion's share, but it's confusing. I don't know the business, so the terms they throw around don't mean much too me. Here's Nortel's release again:

Warsaw, Poland-Oct. 2-FWN--NORTEL (NORTHERN TELECOM) confirmed its strategy of continuous penetration into the Eastern European market and announced today a new GSM award in Poland.

PTK Centertel, recently awarded a license to operate a national GSM 1800 in Poland, has selected Nortel to provide complete radio infrastructure for its new network, under terms of an estimated US$33 million supply and services agreement.

Nortel will supply and install radio equipment covering the south of Poland, a region of dense population with dynamic industrial and tourist activities. Initial deployment of the network will provide services to the area's major cities.

"Eastern European countries represent a major potential in terms of mobile communication. We are willing to support our customers in their strategy of continuous penetration into this market, backed by the performance of our products and our reliability in terms of fast network roll-out and customer support," said Pascal Debon, group vice-president and general manager, GSM Wireless Networks, Nortel.

PTK Centertel, the leading Polish cellular operator is jointly owned by Telekomunikacja Polska (TPSA), the public operator for Poland's fixed network, as well as France Telecom Mobiles International (FTMI).

TPSA already selected Nortel to deploy its Proximity I fixed wireless access solution as well as data transmission systems in Poland.

Okay, so what the heck do they mean by "data transmission system", and "Proximity I fixed wireless access solution"?
