Liar. Seeger never supported the USSR, nor did any folk singing so-called "communists". What they supported were Depression Era workingclass rights, civil rights for blacks and the power of the people versus the corporate autocracy and super elite.
"Communism" changed meaning totally when the USSR became corrupt and a military-police state taking away peoples rights. Seeger and his friends were 100% for peoples' rights, including free speech and all kinds of civil rights, all of which the USSR took away. In fact, the original idealo of communism is something positive, a neighbors sharing Christian utopian ideal. Everyone pitches in and helps each other survive. That was a necessity during the Great Depression when tens of millions of Americans were literally starving.
McCarthy persecuting these great Americans is no less disgusting than the Romans persecuting the early christians. Seeger and his friends were and still are peaceful, caring, loving, patriotic people in the spirit of John Steinbeck. And that goes for Woody Guthrie too, who wrote "This Land Is Our Land". That is the message. It's ours not the property of the top 1% elite as Bushies and McCarthy believed.
A lot of what's going on now is the people taking back their country from the 1% most greedy selfish elitists symbolized by Dick Cheney most of all, the heartless, cold, greedy CEO class, as well as of money misers like Mellon-Scaife, the funder of Newsmax and the Clinton smear campaign. |
