I don't think Armitage or anyone thought it was a big deal that Plame worked for the CIA. It was mentioned as background to explain how Wilson was picked to go to Niger. There was no other point.

BTW, if Plame had been some covert secret agent, it was pretty f****** reckless for her husband to start going around talking to the press and writing articles about WMD's. Guaranteed to draw attention. Wilson should have had to sign a secrecy agreement about his trip for the CIA which would have prevented him from such things.

Looks to me like the CIA (and the State Dept) are politicized by partisan Democrats who put their party ahead of their jobs.
