I am past the threshold of not knowing what I am talking about. What I mean is, after making assumptions about physical bahaviour of transistors (switching time and power needed), the performance of the processor can be modeled in a simulation.

But the basic assumptions about leakage and switching speed are still just assumptions until the processor is built and tested.

Assuming what I said now makes sense, it means that AMD discovered late that its basic assumptions were wrong. And therefor the modeled devices after they were built, didn't perform as well as model indicated. Hence the delays.

In Barcelona's case, one can think that maybe the error is just a bug in the design of the logic of some part.

But when also Brisbane was late, and apparently cannot bin well, it indicates a more basic, shared reason. And that would be the fab process, or transistor design. However, transistor design can be iterated until they get it right. Fab process is not within AMD's means to iterate, because they don't do their own research, but depend on the consortium. Isn't there a lot of chemistry experimantation to get that right ?

Well, there were several leaps in the previous paragraph. Maybe someone who knows will pipe in.
