That's the assumption that apparently broke down. My reading of Intel (who else!) papers is that there are not enough atoms in a 65 nm structure to be statistically modeled. My feeling is AMD's automated process control tools do not and cannot work at that level, for the reason that whatever experience they have at 90 nm does not apply to 65 nm. I also think 45 nm will be impossible for AMD unless they increase their spending on research to near the level of Intel.
