The 'wireless party' has just begun. But as recent trends have shown, wireless is becoming more diverse and hinges more on what is delivered than the delivery system itself.

Overall, it is about delivering more data and entertainment value to users at a greater value. Wireless will remain pivotal because it connects directly to the user 'wherever, whenever'... it enables 'personal broadband' more effectively than wired/fiber can.

"wireless providers who aren't careful might find themselves victims of a devastating disruptive assault from emerging technologies and business models." Wireless broadband is an extension of the Ethernet and Internet environment plus convergence of mobile voice communications and emergence of richer media and applications. It forces these huge component industries to both collaborate and compete for a new, disruptive market. For example, we have witnessed new business models formed from the Internet that has been destructive to video rental. But this has been a benefit to the consumer and has created new businesses. We have also seen a more global shift to digital music and video entertainment that has radically changed the business models and revenue structure of the music and movie industries.

The continued evolution of wireless into higher bandwidth and a flat IP/SIP environment will dramatically shift the business models of service providers. This is not unexpected and major carriers have been shifting their business models and planning to try to deal with the disruption and take advantage of new revenue opportunities. The overall situation is one of global growth in basic and extended wireless services. This is more diverse, challenging, and a bigger opportunity than otherwise possible. Like all major shifts, companies and individuals who take advantage of the shifts will benefit while those who try to hold onto passing business modalities without developing a path to the new ones will shrink from existence.
