why did they abandon me. In summer of 1944, My parents got together for three weeks without their three kids after being separated for two years. We stayed at a huge state orphanage outside of Chicago. I guess they got a good deal on room and board. I was 9, and understood what was going on. My sisters were 7 and 5, and thought they had been abandoned. They never really got over it. It was funny for me, because the orphans had to work while I got to spend the day reading in the library room.
