New York Senator Hillary Clinton (D) remains atop the field for the Democratic Presidential nomination as she has since the race began. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone poll finds Clinton with 37% support this week. That's up two from a week ago. In fact, ever since Al Gore was dropped from the list of contenders, Clinton's support has remained remarkably steady, ranging from 34% to 38% over a five week period.
A separate survey found that 30% of all voters say they would definitely vote for Clinton if she is on the 2008 Presidential ballot. However, 46% would definitely vote against her. That 46% definitely vote against figure is higher than every other candidate except former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
Illinois Senator Barack Obama (news, bio, voting record) (D) now earns support from 25% of those likely to vote in a Democratic primary. That's down from 30% a week ago.
However, prior to last week's uptick, Obama's support had ranged from 23% to 26% for five consecutive weeks. Separate polling released last week showed Obama leading former Senator Fred Thompson (R) in a general election match-up.
Former North Carolina Senator John Edwards (D) had to deal with horrible news last week as his wife's cancer has returned. The couple held a press conference in Chapel Hill, North Carolina--at the site of their long ago wedding reception--to address the issue. As rumors swirled, the candidate and Elizabeth Edwards voiced optimism and vowed that the campaign would continue. Edwards is now supported by 17% in his quest for the nomination, up from 11% the week before. In fact, the 17% total is Edwards' highest level of support to date.
New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson (D) slipped back to the 3% level of support, down from 5% the week before.
Rasmussen Reports releases national polling data on the Democratic nomination process every Monday and on the Republican race each Tuesday. The current survey of 757 Likely Democratic Primary Voters was conducted March 19-22, 2007. The margin of sampling error is +/-4 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.
