UPI Poll: U.S. should face Iran on nukes

WASHINGTON, March 27 (UPI) -- Nearly two-thirds of those asked in a UPI-Zogby International poll said the United States has a responsibility to ensure limits on Iran's nuclear capability.

A total of 4,824 U.S. residents took part in a March 14-16 Zogby interactive poll looking at a series of questions related to Iran and its nuclear program. Tehran said the program is for peaceful purposes; some Western powers suggest it is for weapons development.

Some 65.9 percent of the poll participants either strongly agreed (36.5 percent) or somewhat agreed (28.4 percent) U.S. officials have a responsibility to limit Iranian uranium enrichment. Some 14.7 percent strongly disagreed and 16.8 percent somewhat disagreed.

UPI Poll: Reach goals before U.S. pullout

WASHINGTON, March 27 (UPI) -- More than 60 percent of UPI-Zogby International poll participants want to see "certain goals" achieved before the U.S. military withdraws from Iraq.

The poll was conducted March 14-16, just before the fourth anniversary of the start of the war in Iraq and as the U.S. Congress was debating a Democratic Party measure that mandates a September 2008 pullout.

Some 61.7 percent of those asked opted for "after achieving certain goals" when asked when U.S. troops should be withdrawn from Iraq. Another 32.2 percent took the other option -- "immediately" -- and 6.1 percent said they were not sure.

UPI Poll: Results on Dems' Iraq plan

WASHINGTON, March 27 (UPI) -- A strong plurality of participants in a UPI-Zogby International poll views the congressional Democrats' plan for a U.S. withdrawal from Iraq very unfavorably.

Democrats have drawn up legislation on funding for the war in Iraq that includes a plan to have the U.S. military out of Iraq by September 2008. U.S. President George Bush, who also has problems with other sections of the bill, has promised to veto the measure if it passes in the Senate.

While a total of 46.8 percent of those asked were either "very favorable" (20.8 percent) or "somewhat favorable" (26 percent) of the Democrats' plan, 40.2 percent -- the largest percentage for a single choice -- gave an answer of "very unfavorable" and 8.8 percent were "somewhat unfavorable."

While 74 percent of Republicans viewed the plan before the U.S. Congress "very unfavorably," 43.3 percent of Democrats were in the "somewhat favorable" and 38.9 percent were in the "very favorable" camps.
