Government to Announce Winning Bidders on Thursday for Largest Telecom Contract Ever

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The General Services Administration plans to announce Thursday the winning bidders of the government's largest telecommunications contract ever.

Four telecom giants -- Qwest Communications International Inc., Sprint Nextel Corp., AT&T Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc. -- are vying for the 10-year contract worth potentially up to $48 billion.

The government is expected to select at least two bidders, but some telecom experts said they expect all four to be picked.

The contract requires the winning companies to provide voice, video and data services and technologies, including Internet-based phone service and wireless communications, for at least six federal agencies.

The winners aren't actually guaranteed any business, but they would be eligible to bid on individual agency projects.

The agency said Wednesday that GSA Administrator Lurita Doan and Assistant Commissioner John Johnson will discuss the award and program specifics at the agency's headquarters at 10:45 a.m.
