It has a lot to do with getting their asses kicked in 2000, 2002 & 2004. They so zealously want to be in power they are doing it by any means necessary.

No lie is too big, no slander too repugnant, no smear to outrageous. No morals, no ethics. Just obtain power by any means necessary - even if it means that national security is illegally breached - our enemies are aides & abetted & our military is placed at greater risk in the process. Yes, even it it means we suffer more 9/11 type attacks in the process.

And their success in 2006 was seen as a vindication of all of their dirty tricks, so don't look for it to abate any time too soon.
