I don't know what to do except hold tight and wait for the appeal to wear out and try to provide a better alternative.

That has been my impression. It was very much the whites mentality in Rhodesia as well. I don't see it as likely to succeed, but strange things do happen.

My own opinion is that Israel should be more proactive in looking at a more accommodative stance on East Jerusalem, the West Bank settlements, and some joint control of the holy sites. The current Saudi plan should be encouraged. They should make these ideas known, along with the condition that Pals must respond with public stance that the future includes a safe and secure Jewish state in the ME. Something like that might work IMO. We will see I guess.
