Prior to the Patriot Act (boy, will that name go down in infamy), these positions required confirmation as part of a check and balance to prevent pure political hackery. Confirmation is a method for a review by both sides to prevent the sort of political cronyism we're seeing now.

With Bush, that went out the window, and we saw at least one highly qualified prosecutor fired to make room for one of Rove's buddies. You think that's how political appointees should be handled? As a reward without regard to performance?

We need MORE competent people in government, not fewer.
