It's not just his assertion. Evidence is on his side.

If there is evidence why didn't your reply to "How do you know that?", mention it? And more importantly what is the evidence?

Republicans rep heather wilson and senator pete domenici both called to pressure him to expand an investigation into involving wilson's opponent in the local election, and then called the doj and the wh to complain.

And the complaint might have been legitimate. There might have been improper, or more to the point illegal, activity by the opponent. I'm not saying that there necessarily was. I don't know. But you don't either.
