There is no competency exam in my profession, forestry, either. However, I entered a specialty in which they did develop a competency requirement. I was much happier there, and had some credibility. It was the best thing I ever did, professionally, to get that certification.

My specialty was silviculture: the art and science of growing STANDS of trees in order to meet the land-owner's objective.
