I think he author simply described historical cycles. All empires are fueled by their myth. Empires and superpowers deteriorate as their myths deteriorate. Our myths have been the combination of altruism, free markets, and democracy. In the last 30 or so years, we have done a terrific job of destroying our altruistic image around the globe. Democracy is an acquired taste. This leaves free markets - globalization - as our preeminent myth. I read the essay as suggesting that a national myth based essentially on economics does little to meet the more transcendent needs of everyday men and woman, that we are wired to want more than bread on the table.

Globalization is pretty thin gruel with which to win hearts and minds.
