Certainly there's history that supports our POV's , as you mentioned. I point to the air offensive against Serbia, once again, to make one point and one point only.
That offensive was never intended to bring down that nasty regime ( an unintended but welcome circumstance, i think you'd agree ) but to dissuade the Serb proxies from the wholesale slaughter of Moslem Albanians.
I believe that a potent and concentrated air offensive with extreme prejudice ( please make no mistake about the context within which this word appears ) would be intended to serve one or two obvious purposes...and one of them would not be to begin a wholesale war with Iran....BTW, I think their capabilities are woefully overestimated and, yes, there are those Iranians who would seek Western, Israeli blood with vigour. Yet, I suspect, and suspect only that they would be few in number and, in FACT, would be sitting ducks.
The fears, well grounded, is a blossoming of worldwide terrorism----targets already picked out. And the 15 Brits...therein lies the main rub. I fear they would be toast. It is my belief that is the primary reason we are just posturing...which just, with luck, might be bought.
