Well, you're wrong. I would call Iran an occupier. I'm actually worried about Iran taking over Iraq. I've said that, so while you may have confused me with your ideas about what "left leaning opinion is", it would be better if you didn't do that.
What can we say about Iranian violations of the Geneva convention? Well me, I expect them of Iran. What's the point in peeping? They're not the same kind of country we are, and peeping at them won't change them. Sadly Nadine you do not understand the reason for peeping. People peep about Gitmo because they do not WANT to be like the Iranians, not because they think, as you so errantly conclude, that international law is only binding on the US. International law, as you have so often pointed out, isn't terribly enforceable, but if we do not hold ourselves to it, we are hardly in a position to champion it to the rest of the world as a good thing, are we? So Nadine, if you care about international law, and you want to see it get stronger, you peep about it when you think an example needs to be set. I hope the UK lodges complaints about the treatment of their prisoners, and I suspect they will, as they should do. But the US and other countries who really believe in international law must set an example for the rest of the world to follow- or else there will be no leadership, and we will all sink to the lowest common denomenator.
If you could ever step outside the partisanship arena, and your quite obvious extreme prejudice against "the left" as you so creatively imagine it, your conclusions might be a little more on target. |
