Queen,
Now you are beginning to listen.
I've always listened, yaetmo, but there's so much background noise, I frequently don't hear much in which I can place a great deal of confidence.
Yes, it all started with an INTRUDER accessing into my personal system. My server -- my logs. An intruder who did so via government owned portal. The intruder then posted to UTEK information that was on my server.
Well, that is just not right, I agree. If that's the way it happened, he certainly was wrong to do that. You have your own server? And you say you don't have any special skills or equipment?
Tell me Queen, would you not investigate a suspicious intruder seen on your farm?
Yes, we keep a pretty close watch on things but it's difficult when you have a good deal of land you're responsible for, and it's more spread out than anyone can watch. We've run down poachers, vandals, trespassers that cut up our fields with their 4WDs, etc., but we let law enforcement handle it from there. The one exception to that was one time when my son and daughter-in-law were terrified by 30.06 shells whizzing by within feet of the trailer house they were in at the time. Then the poacher had the nerve to drive into the farmyard and past the house to get the deer he thought he hit in the field (dimwit "forgot" you can't shoot within 600 ft. of a farmyard with buildings and had no permission to be on the property). My son arrested him, took his guns, called law enforcement and lectured him about the example he was setting for his 12-year-old son who was with him and also had a gun. The "sportsman" lost his license, $5000 fine and the right to hunt that year and the following year, which hurt him more than anything, in exchange for dropping a charge of reckless endangerment. He had pals call on his behalf and beg for us to drop charges, but it was out of our hands and we wouldn't have anyway.
But I digress. So yes, I would do what I have a legal right to do, but I'd let law enforcement take the investigation and especially the enforcement, from the proper point rather than being a vigilante myself.
"If it hadn't been a state computer, would you have felt that anything untoward was being done that entitled you to this person's personal information?"
Queen, just what personal information was released?
I don't know what was or wasn't released, that wasn't the question. The question, if it wasn't clear, was what gives anyone not in law enforcement the right to track down another poster's location and personal information? I understand the concern in your case, my concern is the same. Is a private citizen safe from improper snooping and gathering of personal information by those who have no need or right to have it just because he or she chooses to post on an internet message board?
And is that really what you were doing here with your "imbedded images"? Just asking.
