yaetmo said: Back to the IP’s. Two years ago I took task to using IP’s to count the number of posters at Utek. Based on alias counts, there were 45 or 50. In fact, only 12 – 15 unique IP’s were posting. Getting an exact count was hard, because some people like Math were traveling.

Obviously I'm not the computer wizard that you are yaetmo, but I still don't understand how it is legal or ethical if you will, for random posters on a message board to have access to and to gather IPs from other private posters, on their own and for their own purposes and/or their own entertainment, such as you recount above. I understand the law enforcement angle and I understand that sites such as this one do so in order to "manage" their membership. I understand that we agree to it when we agree to the terms of use. And I'm not naive enough to think that privacy guidelines, rules and laws are never breached. But I still don't understand how anyone can believe it to be ok that some ordinary citizen like you or I can make a practice of gathering such information from other ordinary and unsuspecting law-abiding citizens for no reason other than the purely personal.
