It looks like the anti-Islamist position in Somalia is a minority one. If that's true, we can't win.

The Situation in Somalia
COMING ANARCHY BLOG
By Curzon on War & Peace

Although the chaos in Zimbabwe is showing up in some newspapers, in part because world leaders such as Blair and Howard are speaking out against Mugabe's crackdown, the situation in Somalia is all but ignored in most newspapers. Yet the security situation is steadily deteriorating since Ethiopia invaded the country several months ago.

Islamist insurgents have staged almost daily attacks since the invasion, shooting down planes and making regular attacks on troops. Ethiopia is retaliating to this guerilla insurgency with tanks, helicopter gunships and indiscriminate shelling of urban areas that have killed hundreds and left thousands homeless, yet the insurgency shows no sign of letting up, and the populace is revolting: last week, angry mobs dragged dead Ethiopian soldiers through the streets.

Does any of this sound familiar to our American readers?

African Union (AU) troops are slowly replacing the Ethiopian troops, but the AU has taken casualties as well, including a cargo plane that was shot down last week shortly after take-off. But it's not obvious how the UIC insurgency will be defeated.
