When we lived in Scotland my son came down with a serious bacterial infection. He was hospitalized, got fantastic care in a wonderful room, and even though we lived practically across the street from the hospital (just a few blocks), they gave me a room to sleep in so I could stay with him at night. We didn't pay anything, since we had national health cards, and I thought all the medical care we received there was great- both at clinics and at the hospital. I was used to pretty good care here, and I actually thought the care there was the best we'd ever had (until my recent hospitalization in a hospital I can only describe as heaven as far as hospitals are concerned.) So my experience with socialized medicine was very favorable. I imagine the care varies- but then it does under the "you pay privately through the nose" model too.
