Most drugs or herbals that have an effect on a physiological function will pose a threat of possible adverse reactions.

The very fact that they are active means they will create a chemical change in your body. That change can cause other "side effects" in some people.

We are all different so it's impossible for any drug company to fully explore every potential side effect due to cost constraints. It's also impossible to know how the drug will react in various small subsets of patients and the only way to find out is to put in on the market.

CLinical trials of drugs are fairly large but it would cost billions to execute trials with thousands of people in them. The cost would prohibit the industry's existence. Drugs would cost $100 each pill.

Various early stage feasibility studies can cost well up into the millions of dollars before the drug is allowed into people.

One good thing about herbs is that they have been around for a long time, like you mentioned. All the "bad news" should be out if the herbs have been used for many years.
