I am not sure whether I approve of government funding of industry in order to gain a competitive advantage in a certain area. But this case seems pretty clear cut - the spending is already a done deed. I really doubt the Japanese would let this chance to help the local industry slip away. Sure, Intel stands to benefit by having a more reliable supply base when the technology is distributed to everyone, but is Intel's interest really that important? Total lithography revenues are not insignificant compared to Intel, and I know that the equipment is rapidly becoming more costly.
I could be making a mountain out of a molehill. I don't know how big the spending has been in the past, how to put the LLC in perspective, or how far along or viable EUV is going to be. Also, what have been the labs' relationship with lithography companies on research, and what are they now? I'd really appreciate an insider's view on this one. That said, what is Pena doing?!
