I remember in school where a majority of kids knew stuff, but there was a large minority who knew nothing. If you edit out all the honor roll kids and just show the the answers of the lower third or so, we would have looked pretty dumb. And sometimes you have smart kids who are very specialized in their knowledge. A guy who develops the cure for cancer may very well not know where Iraq is on the map. But he's no dummy.
