The impression I got is that they loved Brazil and Brazilians and that is why they moved there. Lemon or not,it was not immediately apparent, they held the (and lived on ) property for a few years before armed men showed up and offered them a choice, turn over property or die.

Some parts of the US (in regards to land use..) are highly regulated some are not.. you just gave me several examples of where Brazil can be quite regulated. Nothing wrong with that and expected (required..) in Urban areas.
