I all those lawless places I went I notice one thing: If you upset the poor locals, the revenge is stealing. To go to far from the beaten path where the presence of the government is not felt, you need to be versed in what I call “the law of the land”.
The lawlessness is absence of the rule of the law, but there’s the “law of the land”. You break the “law of the land” you get punished. The punishment is the ‘revenge’, which is stealing something from you or actually pushing you outright out of your land. Or they send a couple guys to give you the message.

In Nigeria the foreigners lived behind high walls with NATO sharp wires. My fence in Toro Rd nr.2 was a joke. My watchman was always sleeping, I use to forget my door open without padlock when reached “happy” at 2AM (I was young then). No one ever disturbed me.

The houses with the NATO wire and tight security were always being broke in. I paved the road (Toro Rd. is a dead end street and closed the pot holes using Siemens workers. I put circuit breakers in the power line for the wayo guys of the electricity company do not cut my electricity and ask for bribes to reconnect Actually I padlocked the circuit breakers box.

Our street always electricity had at all times and the pot holes were closed. I was the “sheriff” of the area, and I did not know it: Until one day my driver come and said: I’ve got a message for you from some people: if anyone would play wayo with you, let me know, I will message this some people here who will solve your problem. I never needed to ‘message’ him during 8 and a ½ years there.
