TI: Mobile devices with imbedded projectors to hit market in 2H08

Max Wang, Taipei; Emily Chuang, DigiTimes.com [Wednesday 4 April 2007]

Recently demonstrating a DLP (digital light processing) pico-projector prototype, Texas Instruments (TI) said it has been in talk with handset, PDA, digital still camera (DSC) and notebook makers to discuss launching products with the built-in pico-projector technology, with product launches to take place as early as the second half of 2008, according to company senior vice president John Van Scoter.

Scoter said TI has completed developments of pico-projectors and now the model, incorporating laser-diode (LD) and LED backlighting sources, are ready to be applied in end products. The model can support image size of 15 to 20 inches. With further improvements in brightness and battery time, the size can be expanded to 15 to 40 inches within a 30-180 cm distance, said Scoter.

TI is positive about the growth of pico-projector market in the future and cited iSuppli in saying demand for mobile devices with small-size screens will reach one billion units in 2009.

In related news, Lars A. Yoder, an executive at TI's DLP projector business, noted the company has collaborated with several projector makers on projectors to be used as game consoles, according to today's Chinese language newspaper Economic Daily News (EDN). Coretronic, Premier, Delta and BenQ are willing to introduce projectors for game consoles in the fourth quarter of 2007, said the paper.
