There was a GUYANA SHIELD thread started some time back. Never went anywhere ... but the SUBJECT introduction may be of interest. It follows:

One of the most intriguing areas in the world of mining precious metals is the Guyana Shield. This is a geologic formation which extends into the neighboring countries of Venezuela, Brazil, French Guyana, Guyana, and Suriname. It shows great similarities to the West African Shield, to which (it is believed) that it was once attached to. Both areas have similar geologic ancestry, including greenstones. I know virtually no geology, but what we are learning about these areas is that they are among the most prospective precious mineral zones in the world. I don't begin to expect that I can do justice to this topic, because it would take a lot of it is beyond my scope. However, consider the companies that are in the Guyana shield and what they have found. Goldenstar: Goldenstar (GSR) is one of the top junior companies to identify great gold/diamond properties in the area. Almost everyone by now has heard of the Dachine property in French Guyana, a potentially world class diamond property, run by Guyanor, as subsidiary of Goldenstar (70 % owned), and J/V with BHP, a large Australian Co. Briefly, GSR has multiple properties in Guyana, French Guyana, and Suriname, all of which are hitting outstanding deposits of gold. It is one of the few gold mining shares listed in the U.S., that is trading a few dollars from its all-time high.
Placer Dome: The entire kilometer 88 area is part of the Guyana Shield. Placer Dome has the well known Las Cristinas (Venezuela) property, which they announced earlier this year will go into production. This is a world-class deposit with at least 10 million oz of gold.
Other companies in this area include:
Crystallex (Venezuela), Gold Reserve (Venezuela), Franc-Or (French Guyana), Toscana (Guyana), Ourominas (Brazil), International TME (Guyana).
This is a huge subject, and I'll continue it tomorrow. Suffice it to say that I believe we will see more world-class mining projects developed in the Guyana Shield, as well as the West African shield, to eventually rival the South African mines, which are becoming economically exhausted. I believe that investment in the best companies involved will prove to be very rewarding.
