i won't get into pros and cons of organic but will promote shamelessly SeaWeed if you can harvest it from a shoreline for free as it is a super fertilizer.
Where i live i can harvest it by hundreds of pounds just by picking it up along the hightide line.
But yes it needs to be composted rather than putting it directly into soil .
It is rubbery and tough, so needs be broken down first via composting.Max
