Steve,

He heard that "all hardware would stop functioning. My wife laughed and told him that his hammer would still be operable. She went on to explain the problem in concept. When he left the house, unfortunately, he still believed that all hardware would break at the turn of the century.

This makes me think of how aboriginies are often afraid of having their picture taken since the photo will somehow "capture" their soul.

Essentially... something that you don't understand can be pretty close to black magic.

The fact that the press has done such a poor job of communicating the nature of the Y2K issue certainly doesn't help... lurid stories of banks collapsing & not writing 30 year mortgages (wonder what's happened since 1970?) really haven't help the layman/management UNDERSTAND.

As an example in today's WSJ, the column one story about horrendous problems Union Pacific is having digesting it's purchase of Southern Pacific. Not directly a Y2K problem, but anyone want to take bets on the problem largely being how to merge different software systems?
