I would be curious to know how people feel about Microsoft's strategy versus Java. They say they love Java the language but that, as a platform, Java sucks. Then they come up with this thing called "J-Direct," which allows programmers to write native calls directly to the Windows operating system. Then they paid Apple a boatload of money so Apple could do the same thing with Rhapsody. It looks a great deal like a "divide and conquer" strategy to me.

Is this strategy going to work, or is Java so powerful that even mighty Microsoft can't stop it?
