American Idol Fans Blame Tongue Ring, Sanjaya, and Haley's Legs For Gina Glocksen's Elimination

By Joe Reality on American Idol

While hundreds of posters on the official American Idol message board are pointing the finger at Sanjaya Malakar for Gina Glocksen's surprising (yet not entirely shocking) elimination, the reality is that Sanjaya was not even in the bottom three. If another finalist were to be blamed for Gina Glocksen no longer being on the show, then fellow bottom three contestants Phil Stacey and Haley Scarnato would seem like more logical choices.

However, because Sanjaya Malakar has the backing of Vote For The Worst and Howard Stern, he takes the blame every time another contestant leaves before their time. And Gina Glocksen by many accounts left before her time. After her performance of "Smile," Randy Jackson called it a "very nice, controlled performance" and Paula Abdul called it a "flawless performance." Simon Cowell was the only one with negative feedback, and he simply said he couldn't rave about the vocals in comparison to some of the other female singers.

In comparison to Phil Stacey, who received criticism from all three judges and was told by Simon Cowell that his performance had "all the joy of somebody singing in a funeral parlor," Gina Glocksen received very positive feedback from the judges. However, there are probably two major reasons that Phil outlasted Gina. One is that the harsh criticism from the judges likely garnered Phil some sympathy votes, and two is that some viewers professed to voting for Phil because they wanted to keep him in the competition over Sanjaya. Little did they know that Sanjaya Malakar wouldn't even be close to being the second lowest vote getter, so by voting for Phil for that reason, they were just helping to eliminate Gina.

Even though American Idol fans have been saddling Sanjaya with the brunt of the blame for Gina's elimination, Haley Scarnato has also taken a little bit of heat from some viewers. Some viewers have pointed to Haley's short green dress and claimed that her legs have been keeping her in the competition.

Another even more interesting theory about Gina Glocksen's elimination completely unrelated to Sanjaya and Haley's dress has also been tossed out by some Idol fans. Gina Glocksen was always fond of showing off her tongue ring. In fact before Gina Glocksen's goodbye performance, Ryan Seacrest even said "Gina Clocksen and the tongue ring, take it away."

Some American Idol fans have suggested in message board posts that the tongue ring might not have set well with American Idol's more conservative viewers. Could American Idol viewers have been turned off by Gina's tongue ring and not voted for her solely for that reason? Or was it the Sanjaya effect of some people voting for Sanjaya to keep him in the competition and other people voting for Phil in hopes of keeping him safe and sending Sanjaya home? Or were viewers mesmerized by Haley's legs and unable to vote for Gina? Or was Gina Glocksen simply the worst singer on the last performance show and it really was her time to go?
