We now have birthday dinner parties at different restaurants for each since they are all grown. Birthday person's choice. We love to have the whole family together and birthdays assure us of that. Fortunately all of our birthdays are scattered apart, and the little ones have their birthdays at home with their friends, but attend the grown up ones with us all. My husband and I take care of the bills for them. My children's birthdays were always their special day and they were the most important one in the family for that day. I always made birthday cakes and put money between the layers so they and their friends were all anxious to eat the whole cake to find the money. If you weren't at the party, you did not get any birthday cake. My youngest son decided he wanted a four layer cake so there would be more money to find in it. He figured that out when he was four years old.

We also celebrate birthdays with a couple that have been dear friends of ours for many years and those are celebrated at restaurants also. We have favorite restaurants were we can go have a nice quiet dinner, have a bottle or two of wine and sit after dinner, chat and have the birthday person blow out their candles on a small cake and open our gifts for them.

When our first grandson turned eight, we were on a sailing trip out in the Gulf and I baked my first birthday cake ever out on the water for him. I decorated the salon and galley with posters and balloons and he remembers that as the best birthday party he ever had.

Birthdays always build special memories for all of us and we have had great times together celebrating them. The kids usually bring a gag gift or two along with some funny cards for the birthday person.
