I don't know. I guess it's a time honored tradition, as you said. NTSC, PAL and so on. I don't know if it would give European companies any particular advantage if they did. Don't know the IPR situation at all.

I'm not really interested in live broadcast TV anymore (I have a TiVo for every TV set in my home) except for breaking news and super sport events but even the Olympic Games are a pain to watch "live" nowadays.
I receive OTA HDTV on my 12" laptop - watched part of the Super Bowl on it, just for the heck of it. Great picture quality. TV on a cellphone screen - nah.
Can't believe people will actually pay for it and watch commercials to boot.

Edit: btw when it comes to "an eye for an eye": I can't believe that NOK & QCOM are going for the nuclear option in the IPR dispute! If at least it would clear the air but this will go on forever and cost a fortune...
