Rose, now that you mention 'french canadian' I do recall the shrug. Bernie Pilon was an exponent of it in Hawkesbury where he was a Texaco distributor. He used to claim to be 'French' which amused me and I explained how he was less French than I was because "French" Canadians are like "Irish" Americans and "African" Americans. They have got nothing much at all in common with their purported identity. Like many "Maoris" in New Zealand, they adopt a fraction of their ancestry for its status and financial benefits. Take the average African American and put them in their "homeland" in Africa and watch what happens. The average "Irish" American has nothing in common with Ireland though many of them were happy to pay for the dismemberment of children by IRA explosives. French Canadians are like English Canadians. One doesn't mistake them for being French or English. I used to tease Bernie about his shoes, big cars and other Yankee ways. Notice how Quebecois have ranted about about how "French" they are but consistently vote to stay Canadian. Sure, he was different from a redneck Texan dove shooter, but so is the average north-eastern American. I guess that in the USA the swankiest ancestry is to be "Native" American. Mqurice
