I know a little bit about this. Israel was Labor party dominated and the Likud Greater Israel ideology had little following. Israel wanted no more arabs or arab areas to incorporate so they prayed for Jordan to stay out, continue control of West Bank and perhaps even Gaza after Egypt was beat. The Israelis didnt want East Jerusalem under their control, just respect for the holy places and access for jewish folks. CW is that Hussein would have been overthrown if he stayed out--perhaps even your saudi and iraq scenario might have played out. We will never know but all that has happened since could have been avoided if Hussein not entered the war and Israel and Jordan had concluded a comprehensive peace. But as i always see we are where we are and folks who want to refight the wars of the past or overturn the results of those wars will cause greater sorrow for their folks down the road.
