Its hard to known exactly what was going on in the various leaders minds. From externals, Hussein could look at the partition boundaries vs. the pre six day war boundary, add in the known desire for Jewish control of parts of Jerusalem, and then consider what might happen if he waited until he was the last country standing. How that played vs the knowledge that he was likely to be shot by Arabs for standing still, I don't know. IMO, he had no good choices.

In retrospect, he should have told Israel to invade him right after knocking out the Egyptian airforce, then he would do a quick surrender, and let them get on to the more important parts.
